Desmid
This is a single-celled green alga is commonly found in ponds. It is cresent-shaped and has two distinst semi-cells giving it a symmetrical design. Other species of desmids which are beautifully shaped, are also common. Some are free-floating and others are found attached to larger plants.

Green Algae
there are many types of freshwater algae in ponds. The two types of algae her, Oedogonium and Spirogyra , can be seen as long green filaments under the microscope. Spirogyra has a spiral-shaped green pigment for photosynthesis that runs along the sides of the filament. Algae are very important primary producers in the pond.

Phacus
There are many organisms that have both plant and animal characteristics. One such group are the euglenas. Although they behave very much like one-celled animals, they have choloroplasts as well and can manufacture their own food like other green plants. Placus is an example.

Frog-spawn Alga
This alga, like the Spirogyra, forms filamentous strands. Its gets its name because of its apperance. This alga is also important in food chains as it is the source of food for many plant-eaters.

Sonewort
The Stonewort is actually a green alga, although it is much larger and looks like other flowering plants. It form dense mats which are attached to the bottom of ponds. The alga has a rather shiny-green apperance.
